Lent
Course:
Where the heart is
During
the period of Lent, leading up to Easter, we offered lunchtime
opportunities to share in a series of studies on the theme
of "home, belonging and identity". The material
was produced by Action of Churches Together in Scotland
(ACTS), and our group was one among many meeting in the
West End of Edinburgh at various times and venues. The group
included people from the business community and members
of the West End Churches, one of the few times when the
different sectors overlap.
Fiona
Hutchison, Assistant Minister at St Cuthbert's, led the
group through the various themes, reflecting on our experience,
then focusing on significant moments in the life and ministry
of Jesus.
"Belonging"
opened up how we might feel included or excluded. "Identity"
raised deep issues of what shaped our sense of who we are.
"Culture" made the group react against the negative
view of our culture and affirm many good aspects of life
today. "Home" found us imagining ourselves fleeing
from our homes as a refugee with one carrier bag for our
belongings. (That sorted out the romantics from the practical
people!) "Journey" invited us to reflect on our
own spiritual journey as a spiral of ups and downs, forward
movements and setbacks.
The
prayers and reflection points allowed us time to be quiet
in the middle of the busy day. The group was made up of
very different people who bonded very quickly. We always
left with a new angle on the theme.
Try
reading the story of the Prodigal Son from the point of
view of a homeless person or a refugee. It feels different!
